As there wasn't a direct flightرحلة جوية مباشرة to Lima, the capital of Peru, from Cairo, Leila had to fly to New York and then change planes. It was still day timeنهار when Leila reached New York. She stayed the night at a hotel at the airport because the connecting flight الرحلة المكملة was the next day. A man beside Leila on the plane began to talk to her. He asked her if it was her first visit to America. He told her that he was a mining engineer مهندس تعدينin copperالنحاس, and he was working for the United Mining. He was looking for places where there were other interesting things to find. He said that he had an US passport although he had been born in South Africa. He was based مستقر in the United States, but he spent a few months every year in Peru.
The man on the plane (Martin Lander) tried to get as much information out of Leila as he could. He asked her if she was going to Peru for a holiday. She told him that it was a business tripرحلة عمل. The man seemed quite interested in Leila's work when he heard that she was an archaeologist. Leila told him that she was a research assistantباحثة مساعدة at the University in Cairo. She also told him about Dr. Hafez, who was a well known مشهورarchaeologist. Dr. Hafez was a friend of Leila's father. When Leila was young, she used to listen to Dr. Hafez talking about his work. So, she decided to follow his footstepsتتبع خطواته and take upتشتغل في archaeology. She found it better not to study with him so as not to let people say that he gave her a special treatmentيعطيها معاملة خاصة because Dr. Hafez was a professor at Cairo University. As a result to that كنتيجة لذلك she took her degree الشهادة in Rome at the Italian Institute of Archaeology.

Leila also told Martin Lander that she had worked with Dr. Hafez in the Valley of Nobles وادي النبلاء in Luxor where they discovered a tomb. It contained some jewelleryمجوهرات and there were wonderful paintings رسومات of birds and animals on the walls.
She noticedلاحظت that he was asking a lot of questions so she wasn't comfortable so she decided to tell him no more. The flight attendant المضيف او المضيفة came with drinks and food. After Leila had lunch, she started to read some papers she was bringing for Dr. Hafez. These papers were about the latest developments in archaeology research. After finishing she folded طويتthe papers up and put them in the pocketالجيب in the seat المقعد in front of her and slept.
When Leila woke up, she saw Martin Lander looking through the pocket in the seat in front of her. He told her that he was looking for the in-flight magazine مجلة الرحلة الجوية so Leila gave him hersاعتطه مجلتها .She couldn't sleep again and she watched him carefully.
Leila was keen toترغب في see Lima, the capital of Peru downwards but she couldn't because there were a lot of clouds. She told Martin Lander that she wouldn't stay in Lima. She and Dr. Hafez would take a flight to Cuzco, where the excavation taking placeيحدث. The man told her that his name was Martin Lander. Leila felt nervous متوترةwhen the plane landed although it was perfect landing. Martin Lander was just walking behind her and stood behind her at the Immigrationمكتب الهجرة / المغادرة but she pretended تظاهرت not to see him and decided to treat him as a stranger.

" Nice to meet you, Mr. Mander" but Lander didn't correct him.
